Clean Manufacturing & Cold Storage

Clean manufacturing industries are those industries that involve processes extremely sensitive to air bourn contaminants (ex: smoke) or other types of contaminants. In such industries the active fire suppression system itself can increase the anticipated damage unless certain design aspects have been addressed. One of these aspects is the selection of the fire extinguishing agent and its effect on the equipment installed in the facility. Clean agent fire extinguishing systems were introduced to overcome this issue. Another aspect is the corrosion in metallic parts of the active fire suppression system. In such case, the use of non-ferrous piping and discharge devices may be the solution. Although using water as a fire extinguishing agent in such application seems catastrophic, but sometimes it becomes the only solution to limit the losses in lives and properties specially when it is impractical to install a clean agent system. In such case the pre-action sprinkler system becomes a vital solution specially for its capability to reduce the probability of false discharge. As for the detection, its common to use air-sampling smoke detectors in small clean rooms for its extreme sensitivity to smoke particles. On the contrary, its impractical to use such detectors in large clean area due to the involved cost. Spot (optical) smoke detectors or linear (beam) smoke detectors are the types that suit such case. Clean manufacturing process may be associated with cold storage applications. In such application, the temperature inside the store may drop below 4°C. In such case, the common solutions for protection are either using dry sprinklers or dry sprinkler system. This depend on the store size as the dry sprinkler system is limited in system volume.
