Oil & gas industry is always associated with handling and storage of substantial amounts flammable materials. An uncontrolled fire event in an oil & gas facility may lead to catastrophic results including but not limited to personnel injuries and fatalities in addition to operation shutdown that may lead to financial disasters. The impact on the environment due to such an event is worse than any other types of fire. Low expansion foam systems are the common systems used for active fire suppression in oil & gas facilities. High expansion foam system emerge as a solution when it comes to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) tanks. Spray systems are also commonly used for exposure protection. Deluge foam-water sprinkler system or compressed air foam system may be used for the protection of small size rooms against spill fires in such facilities. As for the detection, its common to use optical detectors ultraviolet or infrared. Rate compensated heat detectors are also used specially in above ground tanks protection. Special type detectors such as explosion proof detectors and gas detectors may be required due to the potential presence of ignitable mixtures in certain areas. Fire protection equipment also play a key role in early response fire fighting procedure in such facility.
