Construction Sites
Construction sites are generally vulnerable to fire threats for many reasons. They are commonly unprotected with fire protection systems. They are also unsecured and consequently subjected to trespassing, which can lead to vandalism, theft, and intentionally set fires. Moreover, ignition sources are common in construction sites. Much of construction site fires - not all of them – could have been eliminated with proper safeguards. NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration, and Demolition Operations, provides measures for preventing or minimizing fire damage to structures during construction, alteration, or demolition. Hazards identification is the first step to avoid construction sites fires. This is done through conducting fire risk assessments. The fire risk assessments is based on the following approach:
Step 1: Identify the hazards
Step 2: Identify people at risk
Step 3: Evaluate, remove, reduce and protect from risk
Step 4: Record, plan, inform, instruct and train
Step 5: Review
Commonly, portable or wheeled fire extinguishers are used for fire extinguishment of small fires in construction sites. Fire trailers may also be used be used in case of large anticipated fires. The continuous training of peoples at risk in construction site on an emergency plan would lead to minimizing fire threats, injuries and fatalities in those sites.
